George models surprise London shoppers!

Posted by George on 09 Dec 2011, 13:37

London tourists and shoppers got a big surprise on Wednesday when four models hit the street for a photo shoot in a selection of our glamorous George Christmas lingerie – and nothing else!

The models strutted their stuff alongside the city’s famous landmarks wearing highlights from our Christmas lingerie range – including our Entice red lace set, our leopard print hologram bra with matching shorts and our Entice sparkle bra.

The photo shoot was perfectly timed to help shoppers with some inspiration for their Christmas presents – and added a bit of fun to the working day for London locals popping out for lunch.

Bee from our George team joined the models at the shoot and gave us an exclusive sneak peek behind the scenes – check out her video from the shoot and see the crowd’s reaction above.

Our brand director Fiona Lambert said: “We thought London was the perfect backdrop to showcase the Christmas range and to provide a helping hand to all those busy people who are either stuck for Christmas present and stocking filler ideas this year or simply too busy to shop around for presents for their loved ones.”

“Our lingerie range includes everyday essentials for women as well as more glamorous gift sets to make ladies across the nation feel special this festive season. We hope the city enjoyed the view!”

The range is available online at George.com and in store now – but hurry – it’s selling fast!

"So pretty and feminine ... like Grace Kelly"

Posted by George on 29 Apr 2011, 12:19

All eyes were on Westminster Abbey just before 11am today as we waited for the first glimpse of Kate Middleton on her wedding day – and celebrity hair stylist Andrew Barton was watching the big moment to give us his expert verdict.

Williamd and KateSo what did Andrew think?

“I absolutely loved her, she was so pretty and feminine. Almost like Grace Kelly.”

And what about the hair?

“One of the things William loved about her is her lovely long locks – it was great she had a style that reminded him why he fell in love with her.

“It was soft, pulled off her face to show her lovely jawline. It was something accessible for brides-to-be with long hair.”

How did she achieve the look?

“It’s curled, but not a tonged curl. It’s definitely been in heated rollers. Kate is championing the return of the roller, she’s making that a definite girls’ must-have after today.”

Andrew BartonWhat products would you recommend if we wanted to recreate that look?

“Gloss Boss range. It’s all about keeping your hair in tip-top condition all the time though to get that perfect glossy look on the big day.”

What about the guests? Did you spot anyone with great hair?

“Well, Pippa had the same hair, and I just thought she looked incredible. The flowers in her hair were beautiful, and English country garden theme, it was stunning. I have got to say David Beckham looked fantastic – think there were a few people watching that thought that! And Victoria got it right – simple and elegant, the best way to go as a guest.”

Anyone get it wrong?

“I love Harry, but he looked like he was off for a night out in Chelsea – a bit too much texturising wax!! And Princess Anne – well her hair looked a bit cobwebby-y. I would love to give her a makeover!”

The nation's true fairytale princess

Kate's wedding dress

Kate Middleton or Catherine HRH Duchess of Cambridge as she is now known looks absolutely stunning in her McQueen wedding gown and really looks like the true fairytale princess which she now is.

The dress is contemporary yet classic, and extremely romantic with the high sculpted neckline and full length Chantilly lace sleeves. The structured bodice fits her perfectly, and the 2m 70 train is just the right amount of length to fill the Abbey and to make a dramatic entrance.

The tiara which I hear was lent to her by the Queen and the long veil complements the gown perfectly and even slightly resembles the iconic movie star Grace Kelly’s wedding gown in 1956 to the Prince of Monaco.

Kate you look absolutely delightful and are the nation’s true fairytale princess! I feel very proud to be British!

A festival of fashion as William weds Kate

Posted by George on 29 Apr 2011, 11:04

Our design team at George were glued to the TV screens this morning for the festival of fashion around the wonderful wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

royal wedding fashion

Amanda and Kausar from the design team had talked last night about who they thought would be revealed as the designer of Kate’s wedding dress – and Kausar said she really hoped it would be Sarah Burton from Alexander McQueen. She was right!

Kausar said: “I was expecting the dress to be very simple and understated. As she stepped out of the Rolls at Westminster Abbey I thought she looked heavenly! Absolutely beautiful and every bit a princess to be.

“The dress was so pretty, quite 1950s and understatedly glamorous. The delicate sheer lace over bare shoulders, back and arms was modestly revealing and showed just the right amount of flesh and I loved the full skirt and long train! I’m glad she had her signature glossy mane down, just stunning. I want to get married now!”

Buy from George with a clear conscience

Posted by George on 08 Apr 2011, 13:17

At George our aim is to bring you quality clothes at affordable prices and we know this sometimes raises questions about how our clothes are made.

We work with 720 factories in 23 countries and we care passionately about the people who make our products. That’s why we work with organisations and charities around the world to improve workers’ rights and working conditions, reduce working hours, increase skills and provide health and education benefits.

Last week we took Jen from Retail Week to see for herself some of the improvements we’ve been making in Bangladesh. Our pilot scheme there has been so successful at improving quality and increasing workers’ wages in four factories that we’re now going to roll it out to factories in India and China. Paul from our ethics team tells us more about the “Lean manufacturing” trial in his latest Aisle Spy blog post.

Two years ago we also funded a new school in Ashulia just outside Dhaka and our managing director Andrew Moore visited the school recently – see how the schoolchildren are getting on in his video above.

You can read more about our ethical commitments and community projects in our report called “Doing the Right Thing”. Read the full report here

Chinos spotted in George House

Everyone seems to be wearing chinos this week in George House so I thought I’d share a few pics with you!

I’m wearing mine with a fitted denim shirt and pumps for a smart/casual look for work, but I also wear them dressed up with cutaway heels and an oversized top for going out. The ones I’m wearing here are realy comfy and slouchy, flattering and not too tight. I think chinos going to be a big hit for this Spring/Summer, so we’ll be doing a “How to wear chinos” feature on George Style soon.

Here’s what Ruth and Tracy said about theirs:

Ruth: “I don’t usually wear chinos – I’m wearing them as they are a current trend and give a nice smart casual look for the office. I like these as they are a trend shape in camel which is a trend colour – the slim fit through the leg makes me feel slimmer. Chinos are easy to wear as all you need is a cute basic vest to tuck in and the trousers do the talking! They’re also versatile as you can wear with a flat shoe or a heel dependent on the occasion.”

Tracy: “This is my first pair of navy bottoms for the season to go with my new camel and tan purchases. Great fit, love the fabric which has a bit of stretch. I’ve seen loads of chinos while out inspirational shopping for work and they’re starting to come through in colours too. Very easy to wear so I’ll definitely be looking to buy again, particularly in the new soft sand tones for SS11.”

The perfect weather for coatigans

Posted by George on 03 Feb 2011, 15:11

Anna wears a coatigan It’s that tricky time of year when everyone’s looking forward to shedding their winter coats but the weather’s not warm enough to risk a cardigan, so what do you wear?

One solution is the coatigan – an ingenious cross between a coat and a knitted cardigan that is just the job for overcast days. It’s an ideal layering piece that will keep you warm while you’re standing around in the school playground or waiting for a train. It’s quite a casual look, so wear it with skinny or straight jeans or casual trousers. Here George colleague Anna is wearing a beige long-sleeved coatigan with leggings and faux fur-trimmed boots. It’s a look that suits all ages too – High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens was spotted looking great in a chunky knit cream coatigan styled with skinny jeans and black boots.

We’ve also put together a coatigan outfit on George.com to show how it could look with a skirt and floaty blouse.

We’ve got a wide selection of coatigans to choose from in store and online – check out our range of coatigans and scoop neck tops here

Trendspotting at Berlin's Bread and Butter

Posted by Kausar on 02 Feb 2011, 10:20

Shopping in Berlin I recently went on a trip to scenic Berlin with Fiona from our buying team to check out the latest fashion trends for Autumn Winter 2011 at the Absolute Bread and Butter trade show. The show, which ran from the 19th to 21st January, is famous for being one of the leading international trade fairs, and features innovative and unique brands from all across the globe.

It was a great show, totally packed out with a great atmosphere even though it was absolutely freezing! The fact that the show is staged in the hangars of Berlin’s Templehoff airport (an old disused airport) made it even colder.

We got to Berlin in the afternoon and had half a day perusing the shops in the trendy Mitte area of Berlin which is packed full of little boutiques and shops where you can find some really cool denim stores as well as your usual high street names. It was really good to see what everyone was launching their spring ranges with – even though it’s freezing outside, there were a lot of Spring looks in the shops.

Some of the high street shop windows looked great, showing a tropical jungle paradise theme with jungle foliage prints – which is great as George are also on the same wavelength, launching a tropical paradise holiday shop and jungle fever in high Summer.

The other key thing we saw lots of is the chino and its denim sister version the jeano. A lot of the Spring looks featured this shape, so it’s definitely key for Spring/Summer 10. We still saw lots of skinny jeans and the new 70s flare coming through as well.

We've got big plans for Graduate Fashion Week 2011

Posted by George on 27 Jan 2011, 20:47

We’re very excited about being the new headline sponsor for Graduate Fashion Week – one of the key events in the British fashion calendar. We’ve got big plans for the event later in the year which we shared with Terry Mansfield, Chairman of Graduate Fashion Week, when he came to see us at George house earlier this month. Here he explains why Graduate Fashion Week is so important:

He was impressed by the number of fashion graduates who work at George, not just in the design team but across all areas of the business.

While he was here he met Dulcie – one of our designers who won an award for her portfolio in Graduate Fashion Week 2009. It was this award that brought Dulcie to the attention of our brand director Fiona Lambert and led to her job at George. In this video she gives other graduates advice on getting into the industry.

Get the look: The best-dressed men in Britain

Posted by George on 07 Jan 2011, 10:09

Are these the most stylish men in Britain? GQ magazine thinks so – their 2011 list of the top 50 best-dressed British men is out. Heading up the list this year are Kick-Ass star Aaron Johnson, actor and model Douglas Booth and 2010 BAFTA Rising Star nominee Nicholas Hoult…and a surprise entry at number 26 by eight-year-old Romeo Beckham who is fast becoming a style icon in his own right.

We asked Matt from our menswear team for his opinion on all four…

Top of the list Aaron Johnson is pictured above with his Smirnoff Black Most Stylish Man Award at the 2010 GQ Men of the Year Awards in London last September.

Our men's shaper vest comes top in Which? magazine survey

Posted by Oliver on 23 Dec 2010, 13:30

Bodysculpt vestOur Bodysculpt vest is the best buy for men wanting to hide that Christmas pot belly, according to a new survey by consumer magazine Which?

It beat competition from much more expensive support garments sold by other retailers – some costing up to eight times as much – in tests conducted on two “generously sized” men.

There was huge demand for our Bodysculpt vest when it first went on sale a year ago.

Jonathan Ross featured it on his chat show and persuaded Jeremy Clarkson to try one on and show off the results.

Since then other high streets have followed with their own support garments – but, as the Daily Mail reports, the George vest came out on top when Which? conducted their investigation.
