Preview: Barbara Hulanicki's latest collection

Posted by George on 26 Jan 2012, 19:53

Barbara Hulanicki’s latest collection for George is available exclusively from George.com and has a distinctly oriental theme to it.

The range was inspired by oriental florals, soft 70’s daisy prints and romantic hand-drawn heart prints – perfect for Valentine’s Day.

All the pieces in the collection are very versatile so you can wear them at work and then dress them up for a night out. You can wear the tops with formal trousers or jeans for a smart, casual look.

Amanda from the George design team says: “My favourite pieces are the oriental printed chiffon blouse and the colour blocked dippy hem tunic. I’d wear the chiffon blouse with skinny jeans and pumps and I’d wear the tunic with black leggings or black skinny jeans and heeled boots.”

Barbara Hulanicki midi print dress Barbara Hulanicki’s new collection is out now in store and on George.com. As we said in our exclusive preview her second collection includes retro prints, chiffon tops and 70s shapes.

Fashion editors loved this amazing printed midi dress (left) as well as this printed tie neck blouse and this dragonfly print blouse.

We caught up with Barbara to ask her about her latest collection – and to put a few questions to her from George customers. This is what she said:

What can people expect from your 2nd collection?
The collection is an assortment of fun clothes for the miserable cold days of February and March.

What is your favourite piece from the new collection and why?
I love the long chiffon smock and the black Siamese twin set the most. The maxi seems to have a happy response also.

What is your favourite outfit from the 70s and where did you wear it?
I loved to wear my BIBA Leopard fur fabric coat. I wore it every day to work and play.

What is/was your favourite decade for fashion and why?
Definitely today, it is so interesting as there is something for every age group. And the shoes today are art pieces.

What are your fashion predictions for 2011?
Affordability! Good price price price! We are all addicted to shopping and George is the perfect place for great prices and quality.

What should Kate Middleton wear for her wedding to Prince William?
She should stick to her simple shapes and not go too fou fou…She wears very graphics shapes and they work really well. She also has an amazing figure.

Exclusive preview: Barbara Hulanicki's second collection

Posted by George on 28 Jan 2011, 16:48

Anna wears Barbara Hulanicki We launched Barbara Hulanicki’s first collection for George last year and now the Biba founder is back with a new collection of retro prints, chiffon tops and 70s shapes.

Amanda from our design team says: “I really like the midi length dress with lotus print and stripey sleeves. It really sums up Barbara’s signature ‘old school’ Biba prints, which are so on trend with the whole 70’s revival happening at the moment. Plus the midi dress is the key dress length for the in-between seasons from winter to spring!”

Look magazine also love the new collection. In their online blog they say: “Bang on the money, thanks to the designer’s signature retro style, you can nail the ‘70s trend with floaty blouses in dragonfly prints or make a statement with clashing stripes and florals splashed over maxi dresses and everyday tees. We’ll be living in this dress and biker boots until the weather warms up.”

The midi was modelled on Lorraine Kelly’s ITV show in a feature about 70s styles and was described as “universally flattering”. You can watch the clip again below (the dress appears at minute 4:21). The dress has been hugely popular and has now sold out online – we’re hoping to get more stock in so keep checking George.com from Tuesday February 8th.

Look out for the new Barbara Hulanicki collection which is online now and will be in store from February 14th 2011 – and leave us a comment below to tell us which is your favourite piece.

Out now: New Barbara Hulanicki collection

Posted by George on 22 Nov 2010, 10:18

We’ve been working behind the scenes with British fashion icon Barbara Hulanicki for months and today we’re delighted to launch her new collection exclusively at George.

Barbara introduces her first range for George in this video and explains why Asda is the perfect place to sell her designer clothes:

As the founder of 1960s fashion label Biba, Barbara’s philosophy has always been to make high fashion affordable and so her collection is priced from £8 to £25. Barbara has been involved at every stage from concept and design to choosing the fabrics and the final photoshoot.

“My new collection for George is a reflection of all my favourite silhouettes, prints and signature wardrobe essentials,” says Barbara.

George Brand Director Fiona Lambert thinks the collection should appeal to Biba fans and younger customers alike as it ties in with the 70s trend we’ll be seeing more and more of next year.

She says: “There are lots of mums out there who will remember Barbara from her Biba history but equally I think we’ll get lots of new fans because the clothes are so fashionable and the trend is bang on.”

The Barbara Hulanicki collection includes tunic-style tops you can wear with slim-leg trousers or leggings, blouses in lightweight chiffons with ruffled collars and bell sleeves, and wide-legged palazzo pants. Barbara suggests layering the jersey tops underneath the chiffon blouses. And you can finish off the look with one of two co-ordinating printed scarves – either as a headscarf or around the neck.

We love the collection and hope you do too – tell us what you think and your favourite piece by leaving a comment below.

The collection is available in sizes 8 to 20 on George.com and from Monday 29th November in the stores listed here.

Barbara Hulanicki collection creates a buzz

Posted by George on 12 Nov 2010, 12:27

Barbara Hulanicki’s new collection for George is creating a buzz before it’s even landed in store.

This week it’s been featured in She, Now, Look and Star magazines as well as handbag.com.

Her first range for George is out at the end of this month and features tunics, mini dresses, jersey tops and wide leg trousers. She has included all her signature shapes and has been involved in every stage of the design process, from the first illustrations to choosing the fabrics to fitting the clothes for the photoshoot.

We gave Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton a sneak preview of the collection and she loved this purple top which she wore for her show today, proving it’s not just the Biba generation that loves Barbara Hulanicki’s new look.

“I wanted to design a range for young thinking people of any age, people who are fun and care-free, and I think that I’ve achieved that with this collection,” says Barbara in her interview with handbag.com. “The range features lots of lovely flattering shapes and original prints of mine. It’s all great quality and good design at a low price, so I’m very pleased.”

Barbara Hulanicki collection in Vogue

Posted by George on 14 Oct 2010, 18:07

Barbara Hulanicki’s new collection for George is featured in Grazia and Vogue this week as she talks for the first time about why she has teamed up with George.

Both magazines published this picture of one of her pieces – an angel sleeve jersey top in monochrome black and grey which will launch with the rest of the collection in November.

When Barbara founded Biba in the 1960s her clothes were designed to appeal to young people at affordable prices and she believes George at Asda shares the same philosophy. Barbara sold the Biba brand in 1976 and it is now owned by House of Fraser.

Barbara tells Vogue magazine: “The thing I didn’t like about the new Biba relaunch was the prices – it is too expensive. With Asda it’s the total opposite – it’s like the old days in the Sixties. I love seeing people happily shopping without feeling guilty because they’ve spent too much. I want to do what I always have done – make clothes for young people living in bedsits. What was different about designing for Asda was creating pieces that go up to size 20. I had to do things in a different way – it was exciting.”

Barbara Hulanicki comes to George at Asda

Posted by George on 01 Oct 2010, 20:08

Illustration by Barbara Hulanicki This illustration is the first glimpse of a very special collection that is coming to George in November.

We’re delighted to have teamed up with Barbara Hulanicki, the founder of the iconic British fashion label Biba in the 1960s, to create the new collection which has been entirely designed by her.

Her new collection looks amazing and is totally in keeping with the 1970s trend we’ve seen on the catwalks for Spring/Summer 2011. This printed tunic – illustrated by Barbara herself – is part of the collection.

Barbara’s philosophy has always been to make high fashion affordable and so the designer pieces will be on sale at value prices. When Barbara launched Biba the label was famous for producing low-priced versions of high fashion including a pink gingham dress worn by Brigitte Bardot.

Barbara was at the photoshoot for her new collection last week which was styled by Caroline Baker, a famous stylist form the 1960s and 70s and former editor of Nova.

If you can’t wait for the full collection in November, our Tickled Pink collection this year includes four t-shirts with stunning signature illustrations by Barbara. Raise money for charity and look fabulous!

We’ll be bringing you more details of the collection soon – keep checking the George Style blog for more photos, videos, exclusive interviews and competitions.
